About the artist
Ilgvars Zalāns (b. 1962, Riga) is a Latvian painter whose practice treats painting as a physical, time-based event rather than a route to an object.
He studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts and graduated from the University of Latvia. Working in acrylic, pigment and mixed media, he builds repetitive grids and then deliberately disrupts them — scraping, flooding, abrading — so that the finished surface reads as a record of movement rather than a decorative motif.
The ongoing Border Condition series treats borders as unstable zones of tension, control and transformation instead of fixed lines. Silent Ukiyo sets contemporary grid compositions against references to ukiyo-e woodblock printing, drawn from long working periods in Japan.
Since 2007 he has carried action-painting performances through a thirty-three-country tour. His work is held in public and private collections including the Mark Rothko Art Centre and the Benetton Art Collection, and in 2022 he received Second Prize at the Velázquez International Painting Award in Shanghai. He lives and works in Riga.
